Nisei Week Fashion Event 2017
This year marks the 77th celebration for the Nisei Week Japanese Festival, one of the largest and longest running ethnic festivals in the United States. Established by the Nisei (second generation Japanese Americans) in 1934, a unique aspect of the festival is the hundreds of volunteers that organize and run the annual event. The festival features a grand parade through the streets of Little Tokyo (Los Angeles civic center), cultural exhibits, musical performances, sporting events and a pageant where a queen is selected to represent the Japanese American community of Southern California. The Nisei Week Foundation was established in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to oversee the annual festival.
